SNAP: what it is, who qualifies, and how to use the benefit.

How much can you earn through SNAP?

The SNAP benefit amount is not fixed. It varies depending on household size, income, and some specific expenses. But there is a way to get a clear idea of what to expect.

How the value is calculated

The government starts with a maximum value defined annually, called “maximum allotment...and subtract 30% of the household's net income. The result is the monthly benefit.

In practice: if the household's net income is zero (no income at all), the family receives the maximum benefit. If there is some income, the benefit decreases proportionally, but does not reach zero as long as the family remains within the eligibility limits.

Reference values for 2024

To give an idea of scale, these are the maximum monthly benefits approved for fiscal year 2024 in the 48 contiguous states:

  • 1 person: up to $291 per month
  • 2 people: up to $535 per month
  • 3 people: up to $766 per month
  • 4 people: up to $973 per month
  • 5 people: up to $1.155 per month
  • 6 people: up to $1.386 per month

Alaska and Hawaii have higher values due to the higher cost of living in those states. These numbers represent the ceiling; the actual benefit for each family is calculated on a case-by-case basis.

The EBT card: how it works on a daily basis.

SNAP benefits are deposited monthly onto a card called an EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer). It works like a regular debit card, but can only be used to buy groceries.

The card is accepted at the vast majority of supermarkets in the U.S., including Walmart, Kroger, Publix, Aldi, and many others. Some farmers markets also accept EBT — and in certain programs, the benefit amount may be doubled when used at these locations.

The balance does not expire from one month to the next; any unused funds remain available for the following month. However, the benefit accumulates month by month, so it is not possible to "save" large amounts at once.

What cannot be purchased with EBT

The SNAP EBT card covers food for home preparation. The balance cannot be used to purchase alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, hygiene or cleaning products, ready-to-eat hot meals, or restaurant meals, with some exceptions for seniors and people with disabilities in specific programs.

What happens to the benefit if income changes?

The benefit is recalculated periodically, usually every 12 months, in a process called recertification. If household income increases or decreases during this period, the change must be reported to the local SNAP office.

Unreported changes can result in additional benefits, which the government will have to reclaim, or in the benefit being cut off without notice. Recertification exists precisely to keep the value updated.

Something few people know: even those who start working during the benefit period don't automatically lose their SNAP (National Social Security Information System). The new income is reported, the benefit is recalculated, and it can remain at a lower value as long as the total household income remains within the limits. The SNAP was designed to reflect the family's financial reality, not to punish those trying to improve their situation.
