For the season 2024/2025, the official weekly rate was set at €33 per week, totaling about €924 over the course of a standard 28-week season. This value is determined based on the average cost of domestic heating and is reviewed annually by the Irish government.
This amount can be received weekly on the same day as the main social security payment or in the form of single payment (lump sum), depending on the beneficiary's choice.
Since domestic fuel tends to be more expensive during the colder months, this support serves as an essential supplement to the budget of vulnerable families.
Increase approved (Budget 2026)
No Budget 2026the government approved a €5 increase per week, raising the rate to €38 per week starting in January 2026.
This change directly impacts:
- The total amount received throughout the season;
- the beneficiaries' budget projections;
- Retroactive payments for those who were already qualified at the start of the season;
- Possible adjustments to the MyWelfare system and Department to reflect the new value.
This increase was announced as a response to rising energy costs in recent years, ensuring greater protection for vulnerable groups during the winter.
When is it paid?
The Fuel Allowance can be paid in two ways:
- Weekly — along with the beneficiary's main payment;
- In two single payments (lump sums) — typically deposited at the beginning and middle of the heating season.
The choice depends on each family's profile and financial organization.
