Social Tariff: Everything About the Belgian Benefit

FAQ

1. What exactly is the social tariff?

It is a reduced tariff for electricity, gas (and in some cases heat) intended for people/households with low incomes; there is also a separate scheme for fixed internet (Social Internet Offer).

2. How do I know if I'm automatically entitled?

Use the online "Mon tarif social" service or contact the CPAS/OCMW in your municipality; in many cases the system automatically checks against public databases.

3. Can I apply for the benefit if I already receive another form of assistance?

It depends: some benefits are not cumulative; check with CPAS and the provider to find out what combination is possible.

4. What is a Social Internet Offer and who provides it?

Since March 1, 2024, this is the new social package for fixed internet (minimum 30 Mbps and 150 GB); it is requested from the operator who verifies eligibility with FPS Economia. Operators such as Proximus and others participate in the program.

5. What if the supplier refuses to apply the social tariff?

Gather evidence (invoices, communications), request a statement of eligibility from CPAS, and appeal to the regulatory body (BIPT for telecom; CREG/SPF Economia for energy) if necessary.
