Who is eligible (Eligibility)
Basic requirements:
- To have been born before September 22, 1959 (i.e., having the eligibility age determined by the “qualifying week” of September 15–21, 2025).
- Living in England, Wales or, in many cases, Northern Ireland (the NI Executive may pay according to compatible rules). Residents of Scotland They do not receive this benefit; there is a separate scheme there called Pension Age Winter Heating payment.
When you are NOT eligible:
- Lives outside of England and Wales (with specific exceptions for those who work or travel there).
- I was in hospital receiving free treatment for the entire week of September 15–21, 2025, and also the previous year.
- I was in prison for the entire qualifying week.
- It has been shown that it prevents claims regarding "public funds".
Special cases — care homes:
Those living in care homes may be eligible, except when receiving certain benefits and having been in a care home since June 23, 2025, or earlier—in those cases, eligibility is restricted.
Quick Practical Examples
- He lives alone, born in 1948. The letter will indicate £200 (if eligible) and the payment will normally go to the State Pension account.
- Lives with a spouse, one was born in 1938 and the other in 1950: The amount of marital support will depend on the agreed values and whether they receive benefits — check the official table.
- He moved abroad, but he came back. The residency rule during qualifying week is crucial. Check the residency and claim requirements.
