Who is eligible to receive the Winter Energy Payment?
The benefit is intended for New Zealand residents who fall into one or more of the following categories:
Pensioners and retirees
People who receive the New Zealand Superannuation Eligible veterans are entitled to automatic payment. This group is one of the main beneficiaries, as they generally face fixed expenses for housing and electricity.
Social assistance beneficiaries
Individuals who receive Jobseeker Support, Sole Parent Support, Supported Living Payment or other similar benefits are eligible. The payment aims to alleviate the financial pressure on those who depend on state support, especially during months of higher energy consumption.
Students in vulnerable situations
Students who receive Jobseeker-linked student support or specific benefits may automatically receive the Winter Energy Payment, provided they are registered and meet the eligibility criteria.
Low-income families
Households with dependent children and limited income may also be eligible for the benefit. The payment helps cover electricity costs that increase significantly during the winter, ensuring comfort and safety for residents.
Practical tip: Even if you already receive some benefit, check that your information is up to date to ensure that the payment is applied correctly.
